Is unbelievable how many good comic books you were capable to finish and release. I wish I have this kind of focus, I’m trying to release my own comic book for years, and I never get it done, cos the amount of work I get in the comic books field. You are a big inspiration for me.Thanks for all those great videos.

I'd make a couple of very simple foundational points. Don't go with your first idea, however good it seems. Use it as a starting point to make something better. Your story idea must excite _you_ in some way. Don't assume that it will grip others, but you're not that into it. ie its not perfect but 'it will do'. You'll do a better job on all the hard work if you feel it's an exciting idea. And finally. Surprise the reader. If the story lulls, make something happen. We all want to be thrilled, not to have to wade through a story. I have a low boredom threshold, if I wanted a 300 page novel where a Russian man comes to term with his mortality and buys a coat, I'd read Dostoyevsky. We read comics for excitement. Excite me.

an artist must yogically create the subject in the mind and then it will create itself physically. Like, the process will flow very naturally. So you manifest it.

I just found this video yesterday to help with my art block. I haven’t had an education in actual story writing besides for elementary when my teacher broke down story writing, so this helps out immensely. The quote towards the end is amazing and reminds me of a quote of Jack Kirby that I love so much I have it on my arm “kid, comics will break your heart” and when you said roughly that getting frustrated in your story process is a sign of heading in the right direction, it’s given me new hope! Thank you so much.

I agree that social media is turning things upside down for real artists, but I don't think going physical media is a solution to the problem, you'd escape the problem, but not solve it. There has to be a way to utilize the internet to build an audience wthout falling into the algorithm traps.

Hey, Jake, I’m doing a 30 day art challenge where I draw a chameleon for 30 minutes for the month of July. The first half is going to be drawing a chameleon from reference, the second half will be from imagination. I was hoping of what do you think of this challenge I gave my self and do you think I can improve my drawing with this? Respond when you can.

For anyone in a VERY low point, I strongly encourage you to look up Neil Gaiman's "Make Good Art" speech. Any time I get into a funk where I hate everything I make, I look this up and listen to it again. One of my favorite excerpts: "Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before...Make your mistakes, next year and forever.” Otherwise, I cycle between these depending on what I recognize I need that day: - "Being a good [craftsperson] isn't about never making mistakes. You will always make mistakes. It's about how well you fix, hide, or learn from those mistakes" (additional note that this came from a professional/competitive quilter known for her precision in her quilts) - "All experience is good experience, as long as it's experience" - "You can't build a city in a day." - "Remember--it's always trash CAN, never trash CANNOT" (usually said immediately after throwing a creation I hate into the bin or other points of low self-confidence)

It was all well and good until finances forced me to never work on art again because I just didn't become successful in time. It didn't pay my bills, and no amount of further hard work was going to change that. Not that I had time to devote to it anymore. Every waking moment was spent working 2 jobs that I hate just to try and survive. I bet on myself and lost. We can't all win. Even if it brings me joy to create, it doesn't mean I can do it for a living, and its hard for that joy of creation to be enough.

Not a daily mantra but a mindset that's been going on my mind recently. The world, the universe is so huge and my existence may or may not be relevant in the long run of history. ⏳ So why don't I start doing something I love? Because life is so precious and I don't want to regret when I grow older. ❤

my mantra: Drive, Flow, Momentum. "Drive" because it's reminded me of my purpose or passion that I chase and I need to be hungry for it, "Flow" is because I wanted to remind myself that flow of work only arrive once you start making it, so it push me to do action first, "Momentum" because you only get the confidence and conformity of that work of yours after you get your first work done, Then repeat

  • @teslainvestah5003

I don't want to call them mantras, because I haven't perfected them, and I don't want to give the impression that I know what I'm doing, but here are some things I have discovered: 1. everything is a waste of time except for doing. 2. waiting kills. 3. You will never be good enough if you're waiting to be good enough. 4. It is impossible to lose progress while learning - all the practice you've ever done is a part of you forever, even if you let that part fade, it always counts for something positive, never zero, and nothing ever counts against you, not even time. The first 3 were things I came up with to try to force myself to start a webcomic for the past 7 years. (I finally did 2 months ago and I'm still going!). While the last one is something I came up with to start living again after my college scammed me and broke my life. I used to be smarter, and I loved it about myself - being inventive was a big part of my identity. I wanted to use my brain every day and be a programmer. Sleep deprivation and stress at college ruined me, aged me, took away my sharpness, and made my memory so much worse, I thought I might never be happy again. I spent the last 4 years knowing that college was a scam that was ruining my life, but I couldn't get out, they already had too much of my money. I watched my health get worse and worse, and I couldn't get out. I thought I would spend the rest of my life missing what I lost. Who was I, what was I worth, if I wasn't smart anymore? The answer is that I'm still kind of smart. They could only take away a fraction of my potential, so all of my original potential is still with me, it just shrank, by that fraction. It all still counts for something. And I should still try to be smart, and try to be the best that I can be. I can't get a programming job, though, it turns out degrees are useless, and job placement rates are EXTREMELY misleading - they literally only tell you the percentage of graduates that get jobs - ANY jobs, and it ends up being almost exactly the same as the national employment rate. So I get all my emotional fulfillment through art now. I guess I should be thankful.
